Trail Report: Sept. 26, 2025

Somehow, we are at the end of September and heading straight into October. Trails are still very dry, though with fall in the mountains comes all kinds of weather. If we do get moisture, pay attention to trail conditions and only use trails when they are dry or frozen. As the days get cooler and shorter, be sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast and sunrise/sunset times so you are not caught out on the trails unprepared. Stay safe and enjoy our trails!
Sheep- Sheep are still in the valley, though the last of the herds will be moving out in October. Check summertrailink.org for current reported sheep locations. Keep in mind land managers do their best to provide accurate sheep locations, however, consider these locations and dates as a suggestion of where the sheep will be. Always stay aware of your surroundings.
Forest Service reports: · Warm Springs This band is grazing in between Thompson Creek and Rooks Creek. This band will continue to graze in this area over the next week. (Trail 145) · East Fork This band is east of Federal Gulch Campground. This band will turn and head west towards Sawmill and then trail off the allotment on 09/30 via East Fork Road/Sheep Driveway. · Lower Hyndman/ Elkhorn This band is grazing in the North Fork of Hyndman. On Friday 09/26 this band will be in the Hyndman Corrals and from there they will trail off the allotment via East Fork Road/ Sheep Driveway (Trails 165 & 166)
Reminders: Galena Lodge is closed for the summer season. Sawtooth NRA HQ and Stanley Ranger Station are closed for the season. Seasonal Motorized travel and eBike restrictions are in place on the following trails: Big Peak/East Fork Peak #076, Castle #140, Placer #141, Adam’s Rib #145, Osberg #147, Barr #168, Oregon Gulch #183, & Fox Peak Connector #938. Bikers and moto riders- trails are very dry, especially in our south valley. This is the time to slow down and use caution. In July a user reported the need for extra caution on sections of the Croy trail system, notable on the downhill portion of Bull Dog towards Bullion Rd. on the switch backs. When in doubt slow down and keep the rubber side down! |
